Ateliers Jean Nouvel to design NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA on the Japanese island and UNESCO World Heritage site Yakushima

The Japanese hospitality startup NOT A HOTEL Co., Ltd. (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Shinji Hamauzu, hereinafter referred to as “NOT A HOTEL”) has announced its latest project: NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA, designed by French architectural firm Ateliers Jean Nouvel.

Yakushima, located off the coast of Kagoshima in southern Japan, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site due to its ancient natural landscape including millennial-old cedar trees.

Ateliers Jean Nouvel was founded by legendary architect Jean Nouvel, known as the “magician of light,” who creates poetic spaces that blur the boundaries between man-made and natural, physical and spiritual, and reality and dreams. NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA will be made of rock and glass. The building appears to organically rise from the earth, projecting the shadows of rain and the sounds of water.

Sales for the NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA vacation home are scheduled to begin in summer 2026. Like with NOT A HOTEL’s other properties, NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA will be sold in the company’s fractional ownership model.
