Designed by Francesco Meneghello and Davide Lanfranco for BLUSIDE Emotional Design, Astemio is a transparent glass vase with a curious shape, just like its creative history.
Like many objects that owe their existence to small design anomalies, Astemio was born from a fortunate miscalculation of the proportions of a decanter designed to enhance the finest notes of a full-bodied wine.
Despite – or perhaps because of – its technical irregularity, its form exuded a singular grace, naturally hyperbolic, as often happens in the works of the two designers. They share an innate sense of balance, sometimes bordering on paradox, sometimes reaching absolute abstraction.
Thanks to this bizarre nature, which transcends function and ventures into other realms of meaning, the project took shape as a real object, intertwining its history with the Italian tradition of mouth-blown glass.
Made of 3.3 borosilicate glass – the purest, most transparent and most resistant to thermal shock – and shaped by the hands of master glassmakers, Astemio combines the uniqueness of its design with the essence of craftsmanship. Thus, partly by chance and partly as a creative challenge, it tells the story of the sometimes unpredictable relationship between functionality, form, and beauty.
It is a vase for a flower, a collector’s glass, a whimsical magical ampoule… it can have a thousand lives. It carries this name simply because wine was never in its destiny.
