“My cats are not just adorable and comforting companions, they are also a constant source of inspiration.” -Grace Coddington*
Grace Coddington is well known for her love of cats, who have long served as accomplices in her artistic journey. She has drawn these creatures a countless time, while playfully incorporating them into her career as a fashion icon, attending runway shows in Paris as photographers’ and fashion designers’ friend, and travelling the world.
This time, Grace is taking them to Louis Vuitton’s caravanserai and continuing on the next leg of this graphic journey, which began in 2019 with Catogram, a charming encounter/dialogue between Pumpkin and Blanket and Nicolas Ghesquière’s dogs, Achille and Léon.
Louis Vuitton Travels With invites Grace Coddington to share her idea of adventure through the story of her faithful felines. Follow Blondie, Blanket and Jimi on their travels to Sydney, London, the Amazon, the Great Wall of China and even to space! The sky is no limit for her imagination, with Grace having designed a series of patches just like the labels on the House’s historic trunks, which charted the course of their owners’ journeys.
This season, Grace Coddington is the guest of Louis Vuitton Travels With and presents her ideal wardrobe for other seasoned travellers who require comfortable, practical and lightweight pieces on their expeditions. Forming the building blocks of her iconic style, her midi dresses are adorned with signature House prints and the exclusive mice and cats motif. Her iconic pyjamas are chicer than any business wear. Her footwear is flat, of course, consisting of sandals and tennis shoes; while she reaches for comforting blankets and plaids on flights and train journeys. The materials are soft and comforting, such as cashmere, knitwear, silk and cotton.
The depth of her knowledge in the Art of Packing evokes Louis Vuitton’s original occupation – he was a box-maker/packer before becoming the world’s leading trunk-maker. An expert in the art of compartmentalising and careful folding, Grace Coddington knows all about how to organise personal belongings inside luggage. Now she has created an exclusive line of bags and kits for the House, crafted in plum-coloured foldable nylon. The legendary Keepall becomes completely flat when packed, yet unfolds flawlessly. Other accessories are adorned with the House’s original Vintage Canvas, crafted in linen and cotton to evoke the woven canvas used for its trunks from 1900.
Naturally, the artist’s collection also features a trunk. Grace Coddington’s secretary trunk, inspired by the historic Stokowski trunk, is equipped with all the illustrator’s essentials to accompany her dream journey: a removable easel, drawers for her paintbrushes and pencils, and even a nook for her cats.
Volez, Voguez, Voyagez with Grace Coddington is an experience of art de vivre.
