A writing tribute to human ingenuity and craftsmanship, they capture the essence of architectural and artistic marvels from around the world.
Château de Versailles: An Architectural and Design Masterpiece
First envisioned by King Louis XIII in 1623 as a modest hunting lodge and transformed by King Louis XIV into a breathtaking palace and the seat of royal power, the Palace of Versailles is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an enduring icon of French culture and refinement. Renowned for its remarkable Hall of Mirrors, its 2,300 elegantly decorated rooms, and its vast, meticulously landscaped gardens, the Palace of Versailles is recognised as the zenith of regal splendour and the embodiment of Baroque art and architecture. The Palace’s legacy continues to inspire artists, designers, and connoisseurs worldwide as a timeless expression of elegance, luxury, and artistic achievement.
A Design Homage To The Sun King
From the refined intimacy of the King’s private chambers to the dazzling spectacle of the Hall of Mirrors, Montblanc artisans have translated the artistry of the Palace of Versailles into fine materials and forms, transforming each writing instrument into a precious work of art.
The overall design elements of each edition make historic and artistic references to Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King. The shape of every edition draws inspiration from a pivotal moment in writing history when in 1707, engineer to the French king Nicolas Bion created the ‘endless pen’, an early precursor to the modern reservoir fountain pen. Each edition’s clip is crowned with the sun, a potent emblem adopted by Louis XIV at the dawn of his reign and a reference to Apollo, the Greek god of light, arts, and music. Completing the signature is the cone bottom and cone shape, inspired by ‘le Chiffre du Roi’, Louis XIV’s personal seal: an elegant, interwoven monogram of the king’s initial, which adorned royal correspondence and décor across the Palace of Versailles.
Montblanc High Artistry A Journey through Château de Versailles Limited Edition 479
Inspired by the opulent King’s Corner Room located in his private apartments, the edition evokes the regal intimacy and elegance that defined the private world of Louis XV. The writing instrument features a white translucent lacquered body, reflecting the chamber’s serene white walls, offset by solid Au 750 yellow gold, partly platinum-coated fittings that pay homage to the intricate gilded décor. Under the translucent lacquer, a fine pattern echoes the chamber’s rocaille ornaments. The cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in lustrous mother-of-pearl, embedded in solid Au 750 yellow gold.
Just like the ornate furnishing pieces created for the Palace of Versailles, the handcrafted solid Au 750 yellow gold nib bears the letters ‘VV’, together with the royal crown. Since secrecy was a central element of power at court, the Sun King used special encryption systems of letters andnumbers known as the ‘Grand Chiffre’ and ‘Petit Chiffre’. They preserved the confidentiality of his military and diplomatic communications and simultaneously conjured up an aura of exclusivity and mystery. According to this system, the number 479, the limitation of this edition, stood for no less than the king himself: ‘Le Roy’.
Montblanc High Artistry A Journey through Château de Versailles Limited Edition 195
Celebrating the famed Orangerie of Versailles, this edition embodies the king’s passion for order, beauty and the perfume of orange blossom. Borrowing its pattern and colour scheme from the symmetrical royal gardens, the design of the writing instrument combines an elaborate skeleton overlay made of solid Au 750 signature gold with a green aventurine stone shimmering beneath. The centrepiece of the barrel, a red garnet cabochon, is encircled by a delicate flower engraving. A touch of the orangery is brought to this edition not only by the pattern on the cone, which is inspired by the vases in the orangery, but also by the decoration on the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib. It depicts one of the historical planting pots, which skirted the flower beds in the summer months and showcased the king’s treasured citrus trees.
A work of masterful craftsmanship, the clip ends in an elaborate depiction of Apollo’s head encircled by the rays of the sun and set in a solid Au 750 signature gold plate. The cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in lustrous mother-of-pearl, embedded in solid Au 750 signature gold. This edition is limited to just 195 pieces—a reference to the king’s Grand Cipher, in which 195 stood for ‘honour’, a fundamental principle at court due to its association with prestige, social status and the king’s favour.
Montblanc High Artistry A Journey through Château de Versailles Limited Edition 18
Paying tribute to the spectacular marbles that adorn the Palace of Versailles, this edition is clad in an intricate mosaic of marble inlays, each sourced to reflect the unique stonework found throughout the Palace. Under Louis XIV this precious rock became synonymous with baroque opulence and splendour, and the Palace of Versailles became an ode to the beauty of marble. As a way of showcasing its various types, the royal marble masons crafted so-called ‘marmothèque’ tables, which featured elaborate polychrome mosaics made up of varied specimens arranged side by side.
Inspired by these precious and rare items of furniture, the Limited Edition 18 features marble inlays throughout the cap and barrel, representing the broad range of marble found in the Palace. The frames crafted from solid Au 750 gold and adorned with diamonds make for a striking contrast. Adding an air of mystery, beneath the Montblanc emblem composed of diamonds set in pavé and surrounded by marble, the cap top houses a hidden compartment, engraved with the king’s secret cipher: 070 and 479, standing for ‘Sa Majesté Le Roy’ (His Majesty the King). A depiction of Apollo’s head, encircled by sun rays and surrounded by a solid Au 750 yellow gold plate, adorns the clip end. Indicating their origin on the Versailles estate, the Palace’s furnishings bear the letters ‘VV’— as does the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib of the writing instrument along with the royal crown.
Montblanc High Artistry A Journey through Château de Versailles Limited Edition 7
The Hall of Mirrors, the most iconic jewel in the crown of the Palace of Versailles, is brought to life by master artisans at Montblanc by transposing the majesty radiating from the heart of the Palace onto this edition made of solid Au 750 gold. Backed by a coating of silver, rock crystal inlays replicate the patina of the historical mirrored chamber—a glorious evocation of its grandeur, defined by ornate mirrors and dazzling chandeliers. The interplay of light and reflection is echoed in the inlays’ polished surfaces and intricate detailing, reminiscent of the room’s opulent decor. Fine strips of gold punctuated by single diamonds frame the inlays, echoing the characteristic Palace of Versailles aesthetic, while bands of diamonds encircle the cap and cone.
The cone’s guilloche pattern is inspired by the intricate parquet flooring, while the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is delicately engraved with a chandelier—a nod to the hall’s radiant beauty and grandeur. The clip features an elaborate medallion framed with diamonds which shows an image of the original sun king, Apollo. In the style of the prestigious decorative medals frequently presented as gestures of courtly or diplomatic favour at the time, the medallion on the cap can be opened to reveal an exquisite handcrafted miniature painting of the view from the garden of the Palace of Versailles as it appeared before the construction of the Hall of Mirrors. The cap top is a veritable jewel in its own right, with the Montblanc diamond at its centre, surrounded by brilliant- cut diamonds.
Montblanc High Artistry A Journey through Château de Versailles Limited Edition 3
Bringing the magic of the Palace to life, the edition draws the gaze from the spectacular Hall of Mirrors to its enchanting garden. The splendour of the Palace of Versailles has been translated onto the solid Au 750 gold cap and barrel through skilfully applied faceted enamel inlays. Created by master artisans at Van Cleef & Arpels, these fine miniature painting inlays depict the view of the gardens as reflected in the hall’s spectacular mirrors. Each inlay is framed with gold strips, artfully hand-set with diamonds and delicate blossoms, reflecting the aesthetic of the Palace of Versailles.
The opulent chandeliers of the Hall of Mirrors, in which the intricate tiers of crystals reflect the light, are captured on the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib enhanced with a brilliant-cut diamond. Marble decorations from the Bath Apartments at the Palace inspired the engraving on the solid gold forepart. The diamond-studded solid Au 750 gold cone takes the form of a seal stamp, featuring Louis XIV’s personal majestic double ‘L’ monogram, and as such can also be used to seal private correspondence. This skilled artwork is further refined with a pattern inspired by the design of the ornate parquet flooring in the Palace. In the cap top, a hidden compartment can be customised by clients to include an engraving of a secret personal ‘chiffre’ inspired by the Grand Chiffre system. Crowning the writing jewel is the Montblanc diamond, surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds in pavé, while the artfully crafted clip ends in an elaborate medallion showing an image of the original sun king, Apollo, encircled by a band of diamonds.
