Laura Gerte presents Desire/Chaos, a visceral reflection on the complexity of a feminine experience.

Laura Gerte creates transformative garments with a focus on confidence and sustainability, portrayed through empowered femininity. A body reclaiming its power, dancing with its polarities – a dash of drama, a touch of playfulness, a little naughty, lots of movement, a strong signature, future punk, upcycled.

Desire/Chaos, her latest body of work, reflects on motives of desire, impermanence, womanhood, pleasure, inevitability, beauty, decay and anger.

Laura Gerte’s signature interplay of strength and fragility is tender and confrontational at once, presented through tactile juxtapositions. The silhouettes oscillate between fluidity and restraint, realized in upcycled, recycled or deadstock materials, emphasizing sustainability without compromising poetic expression.

Contrasts and symbolism run throughout the collection: Skin tight mesh allows seemingly impermanent and momentary silhouettes while rigid canvas constraints the body – a minimal, contemporary and abstract take on corsetry. Silk florals appear to have grown and withered on the garments, draped tees, silk foulards and wrapped mesh accentuate the feminine form, while raw edges and distressed jersey and denim rage around it. Historic and current references are distilled and Laura Gerte’s signatures, such as thick piping, smocked silk, patchworked prints, and trompe l’oeil run subtly through the designs.

Desire/Chaos explores the emotional terrain of contemporary femininity and the contrasting experiences wom*n go through daily, constantly, throughout their lives. It’s a visual metaphor of armor and intimacy, translated into the revealing and the shielding, the exposed and the protective, the ease and the rigid, the delicate and the defiant.

The result is a sharpened language of expression, a complex, raw femininity, an approachable intensity and ambiguous sensuality.

The show is held in an intimate setting, with a live camera capturing the show throughout while simultaneously projecting into the space, accompanied by a soundtrack featuring a monologue reflecting on the themes of the collection.
